Superintendent's Correspondence

To our EPS family,

The health and safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.  The Enfield Public Schools is working closely with the North Central District Health Department (NCDHD) to ensure we are prepared in the event that the coronavirus occurs in Connecticut.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), a new coronavirus calledCOVID 19 was first found in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. This virus had not been found in humans before. This coronavirus can lead to fever, cough and trouble breathing or shortness of breath. There are thousands of diagnosed cases in China and new cases being diagnosed in a number of countries including the  United States.

How Does 2019 Novel (NewCoronavirus Spread?

Health experts believe the virus probably spreads from animals to humans and from person to person. It’s not clear yet how easily the virus spreads from person-to-person.

COVID-19 is not actively circulating in Connecticut athis time Thereforethere is no need to cancel school or social events, and according to the CDC there is no need for students or school stafto wear surgical masks at school.

What are the Steps for Prevention?

There are currently no vaccines available to protect against this virus. Enfield Public Schools will continue to follow CDC recommendations to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses including COVID-19.  These include the following:

·        Wash your hands often with soap and watefor at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol- based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60%  alcohol if soap and water are not available.

·        Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

·        Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

·        Stay home when you are sick.

·        Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

·        Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

·        Obtain a flu vaccine

Symptoms

Patients with COVID-19 have mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:

o   Fever

o   Cough

o   Shortness of breath

Currently there is no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19. There are no specific antiviral treatments for COVID-19. People with COVID-19 can seek medical care to help relieve symptoms.

If a student or staff member shows respiratory symptoms, our school nurses will follow standard precautions and work with our District’s Medical Advisor and the NCDHD to further research individual/family travel histories.  There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in our schools. If this was to occur, we will notify staff and parents/guardians within the school. We continue to be in contact with the District’s Medical Advisor and the NCDHD as more cases become public. Since coronavirus is an emergent and rapidly changing situation, we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to consult the CDC Website for updated information about the coronavirus.
